School Critical Incident Planning

Critical Incident Planning (CIP) is designed to maximize human survival and preservation of property, minimize danger, ensure responsive communication between education and law enforcement personnel, and restore normal operations. Limited attention has been given to the application of technology to aid law enforcement personnel in their planning for effectively responding to critical incidents in schools.

With funding provided by the National Institute of Justice, Office of Science and Technology, the Justice and Safety Center (JSC) is conducting a two-phase project that will deliver a Critical Incident Planning Internet Resource Directory and a Critical Incident Planning computer based training module on CD-ROM.

Phase one of this project was the production of an Internet resource directory intended to provide resources to assist law enforcement and school personnel with preparation, response, and resolution of a school critical incident. The resource, a business-card compact disc, contains web links in various categories. The information contained on the CD is also available at the National Law Enforcement Corrections Technology Center's website - http://www.justnet.org/assistance/schoolsafety.html

Based upon what was learned in developing the Resource Guide, Phase II of the project has been initiated to develop a Critical Incident Planning for Schools computer based training module. The CBT will instruct users on how to create a critical incident plan and will also serve as a tool by allowing users to enter their specific data to create a plan. Phase two is currently underway, with an anticipated completion date of Summer 2004.
