Secure Enhanced Camera Over Network (SECON) (RULETC)
In comparison to traditional Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) systems, advanced surveillance technologies are quickly changing the way correctional facilities operate. These advanced systems utilize the architecture and convenience of the Internet to display video as well as the manipulation of the camera’s position. In small and rural correctional facilities, this technology could play an important role by allowing personnel the flexibility of viewing images from any Internet connected device. This device could include, but is not limited to, desktop, laptop, tablet or handheld computers. The improving availability/security of wireless networks has allowed for an increase in the functionality of computer systems in which this technology is available. By utilizing the Internet as the data transmission medium, those wishing to monitor the camera are not limited to only being able to monitor the system from within the building.
Building on previous efforts in Beattyville, KY, and Santa Fe, NM, JSC continued its work on the use of Secure Enhanced Camera Over Network (SECON) systems for law enforcement and corrections applications through the analysis of emerging Internet Protocol (IP) camera technologies. In this process, an advanced technology was identified and tested in a rural correctional facility. This testing provided the data necessary for agencies to determine if SECON technologies are appropriate for their facilities and suitable to their needs. This data will be disseminated through the NLECTC system to public safety officials nationwide.
