Distance Learning Technology Program Evaluation

The goal of the Distance Learning Technology Program offered through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) Virtual Campus was to assist law enforcement agencies in meeting the challenges of training their officers in current, as well as cutting edge, technologies and techniques in the most effective and cost efficient way possible. The Distance Learning Technology Program harnesses the power and infrastructure of the Internet to provide Web-based training (WBT) to public safety officers. While several research studies have been able to provide insight into the effectiveness of distance learning programs with groups such as the military, government, corporations, and higher education, little research has evaluated the effectiveness of this training tool in the field of law enforcement.
The JSC focused on this overlooked aspect in distance learning programs by evaluating the Distance Learning Technology Program provided by the FLETC Virtual Campus through a WBT format. Research completed by the JSC details participant reactions and learning of approximately 190 law enforcement officers from rural and small police departments (less than 50 officers) who participated in the FLETC WBT program over a one year period.
