American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) International
Foundation Security Report: Scope and Emerging Trends

The security industry has been under more scrutiny than ever because of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Despite this increased scrutiny, limited research about the size, scope, and breadth of the industry has been conducted. Therefore, the JSC, in partnership with the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS), will examine this overlooked area and determine where the security industry currently stands and identify some emerging trends in the field. Highlights of the study will include revenues and expenditures of companies from nine different sectors of industry type. These sectors are based on the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes designated by the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and include the following sectors:
- Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing
- Mining
- Construction
- Manufacturing
- Transportation, Communications, Electric, Gas, and Sanitary Services
- Wholesale Trade
- Retail Trade
- Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate
- Services
Further, employment, security management, investigations, legal aspects,
protection of intellectual property, and the impact of security on other
industries are also being examined in the study.

Data for this JSC project consists of both primary and secondary sources. Most importantly, the JSC is utilizing a pen/pencil self-report survey that will be administered to 4,400 randomly selected participants from Ward’s Business Directory of U.S. Private and Public Companies. All agencies and sectors selected for sample inclusion are offered a choice of completing an online, telephone, faxed or mailed survey instrument consisting of both open and closed-ended questions. By comparing and contrasting changes in security pre- and post-9/11, the JSC’s research will provide a better understanding of the current status of the security industry. The research performed by the JSC will also help to update the current body of work in order to provide insight on the security industry and its relationship to law enforcement and other business sectors.
