EKU Hosts Vital Homeland Security Webinar for Safety & Security Professionals
On June 7, 2007 Dr. Pam Collins, principal investigator in a cooperative
agreement with Department of Homeland Security/FEMA’s Incident Management
System’s Division and Executive Director of Eastern Kentucky University’s
Justice & Safety Center in the College of Justice & Safety, will present a free
90-minute continuing education webinar where she will share pertinent updates to
the National Incident Management System (NIMS) Incident Management Systems
Division (IMSD). The webinar will begin at 6:30 p.m. EST and will provide the
latest NIMS information regarding compliance, technical assistance, standards,
testing, training and resource management. Those interested in participating can

“The lessons learned after the attacks of September 11 and Hurricane Katrina
made it clear that it is necessary to have a coordinated effort from America’s
emergency management personnel,” said Dr. Collins. “NIMS was created so that the
Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and
local emergency management organizations can seamlessly exchange information
when American lives are at risk. It is of utmost importance that all emergency
management personnel stay current with NIMS updates so that they can effectively
respond to future incidents.”
In August, 2005 Eastern Kentucky University (EKU), the Department of Homeland
Security (DHS) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) established
the National Incident Management System Support Center (NIMS SC) in Somerset,
Ky. The objective of the NIMS SC is to improve the ability of first responders
to communicate across jurisdictional lines during an emergency.
Eastern Kentucky University is uniquely qualified to aid in NIMS Incident
Management Systems Division efforts to identify, develop, test and promote the
standards and guidance necessary for first responder communities of various
sizes. EKU’s Department of Safety, Security & Emergency Management is a world
renowned source of instruction in emergency services. In 2006, EKU developed an
online degree option for its Master of Science in Safety, Security & Emergency
Management so that students worldwide could enjoy the benefits of EKU’s
expertise in the field. This program, the nation’s only completely online MS
program of its kind, is designed to meet the needs of today’s working
professionals in fire protection and administration, safety management,
security, loss prevention, homeland security, risk management, and occupational
health and safety.
In 2007, the degree will add certificates and degree concentrations in Homeland
Security, Occupational Safety and Fire & Emergency Services.
EKU’s expertise in the field has also led to an award of $5 million from the
Department of Homeland Security to EKU’s Justice & Safety Center for the
creation of the Rural Domestic Preparedness Consortium which will develop and
provide specialized training for rural first responders and community leaders
throughout the nation.
