KY Regional Community Policing Institute and the Rural Domestic Preparedness Training Center co hosts Federal Law Enforcement Training Symposium in Louisville
Louisville, KY: The KY Regional Community Policing Institute (KYRCPI) and the Rural Domestic Preparedness Training Center (RDPTC) hosted a state-of the art federal law enforcement training symposium on May 22 through May 24 in Louisville. The State and Local Law Enforcement Training Symposium (SLLETS) was conducted by the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). This was tuition-free training for state, local, campus, and tribal law enforcement officers. This training was co-hosted by Louisville Metro Police Department, and the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office.
The State and Local Law Enforcement Training Symposium (SLLETS) is a highly requested training that is taught by dynamic subject matter experts from federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies. The training is reality-based, providing cutting edge information and tools that law enforcement officers can use in the field. The 3-day symposium covered topics including Drug Programs, Computer Forensics, Criminal Investigations, Terrorism and Courtroom Security. Participants learned investigative techniques used in identifying clandestine drug labs, human trafficking and smuggling, an introduction to using digital evidence and intelligence gathering, and security measures in sensitive trials or transporting high-risk prisoners. Over 200 law enforcement personnel, representing more than 70 different agencies from 10 different states attended this valuable training symposium.
“The KY RCPI is proud to have hosted such an important conference, which provided quality training and important networking opportunities for law enforcement attendees,” says Cindy Shain, Director of the Kentucky RCPI, which is based in the Justice & Safety Center, College of Justice & Safety at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. KY RCPI is part of the national training network created in 1997 by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (OCOPS) dedicated to providing comprehensive and innovative community policing education, training, and technical assistance to law enforcement and community partners. As one of 27 institutes throughout the nation, the KY RCPI develops innovative cutting edge curricula on emerging law enforcement issues to challenge and improve traditional training.
Assistant Chief Vince Robison, Louisville Metro Police Department, one of the co-hosts of the symposium, says “This unique collaboration of federal, state and local hosts benefits all of our law enforcement community by exposing us to the most current training and national crime trends and investigative techniques.”
The SLLETS is provided by the Department of Homeland Security through FLETC, based in Glynco, Georgia. The training symposium is delivered at locations across the United States to reduce training costs of state and local law enforcement agencies. This is only the second time the training has been offered nationally, and the first time it has been offered in Kentucky.
