National Institute of Justice Now Offers Course on Working Spanish for Law Enforcement
July 2007. The National Institute of Justice (NIJ) is now offering an online course for Law Enforcement that was developed by Eastern Kentucky University’s Justice & Safety Center (JSC). The course, entitled Español for Law Enforcement, was developed to help law enforcement officers obtain a working knowledge of Spanish and apply it to law enforcement situations. JSC designed the training to equip law enforcement officers with basic Spanish skills, such as descriptions of individuals, arrest commands, and how to conduct interrogations, traffic stops, and domestic violence case investigations.
The Justice & Safety Center, along with Advanced Systems Technology, Inc (AST) developed the computer based training (CBT) course with funding from NIJ’s Office of Science and Technology. The course walks viewers through English translations, phonetic spellings, and pronunciations of Spanish words, and was designed to show how CBT is beneficial, particularly for law enforcement agencies with limited resources. The course incorporates text, video, sound and graphics into the teaching platform and encourages the user to actively participate in learning.
JSC is a team of faculty and staff at Eastern Kentucky University dedicated to the advancement of public safety and security, and specializes in research and evaluation, prototype development and testing, training, and the application of emerging technologies. JSC has achieved national and international recognition as the leading university-based center focused on public safety and security, and is a Program of Distinction under EKU’s College of Justice & Safety.
