Director at EKU Justice & Safety Center’s Rural Community Policing Institute to speak at National Institute of Justice Conference in Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. July 24, 2007
Cindy Shain, Director of the KY Regional Community Policing Institute (RCPI) located at Eastern Kentucky University’s Justice & Safety Center will speak at the National Institute of Justice (NIJ) annual conference in Washington, D.C. on July 24, 2007. For 14 years, NIJ’s annual conference has brought together criminal justice scholars, policymakers, and practitioners at the local, State, and Federal levels to share the most recent findings from research and technology.
The conference will showcase what works, what doesn’t work, and what the research shows as promising. New developments in technology that increases public safety will be featured. The conference puts a heavy emphasis on the benefits to researchers and practitioners who work together to make effective evidence-based policies and practices.
Ms. Shain will deliver a speech entitled, “New Evaluation Models for Training Programs”.
She says, “There is no shortage of training programs delivered to criminal justice and public safety practitioners, but many of these programs have not been adequately evaluated. Studies generally have relied on simple pre-test/post-test measures of knowledge gained and have not examined how effectively this knowledge is put into practice.” Panelists for Ms. Shain’s presentation will discuss two recent studies that developed model evaluation strategies focused on long-term training outcomes. Other speakers include:
-Edward Connors, President, Institute for Law and Justice, Alexandria, VA
-Garry J. Bombard, President, Forensic Institute for Research, Science, and Training, Inc., Chicago, IL
-Katharine Browning, Social Science Analyst, Crime Control and Prevention Research Division, Office of Research and Evaluation, National Institute of Justice, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington, DC
Cindy Shain, as Director of the Kentucky Regional Community Policing Institute (RCPI) and Deputy Director of Law Enforcement Training & Technical Assistance, Justice & Safety Center, Eastern Kentucky University, oversees federally-funded grant activities involving the delivery of training and technical assistance to law enforcement and community members. A retired Deputy Chief, Louisville (KY) Police Department, she serves on the Board of the International Association of Women Police and on IACP Crime Prevention and IMPACT Committees. She has been involved since 1997 in the training of international police in topics related to community policing and democratic policing principles and frequently presents on law enforcement issues nationally and internationally.
